During a tubal ligation, also referred to as "having your tubes tied," the doctor will block the fallopian tubes to prevent pregnancy. There are different methods for doing so, including surgical and nonsurgical procedures. The surgical procedure can be performed in several ways: (1) the tubes may be tied and cut; (2) one or more segments of each tube may be cauterized; (3) a segment of each tube may be removed; or (4) a clip or ring (rubber band) may be placed around each tube to prevent an egg from traveling from the ovary to the uterus. These procedures are performed under anesthesia and involve the use of a laparoscope and tiny instruments, which are inserted through incisions in the belly button and abdomen.

The nonsurgical method of tubal ligation involves placing either a metal and fiber coil (Essure®) or a piece of silicone (Adiana®) in each fallopian tube. After the inserts have been placed, scar tissue forms around them, blocking off the fallopian tubes and preventing sperm from reaching the egg. These procedures do not involve anesthesia, incisions, or stitches.

The success of tubal ligation reversal largely depends on the type of procedure you had, the extent of damage to the fallopian tubes, and the length of tubes that remain. It is most likely to be successful when clips or rings were used to block the tubes. The Essure and Adiana procedures cannot be reversed.

What to Expect

To perform a tubal ligation reversal, Dr. Baggot will reconnect the blocked segments of the fallopian tubes to the remainder of the fallopian tubes. This may involve removing the clips or rings or removing any damaged sections of your fallopian tubes and reattaching the undamaged ends of the tubes with stitches.

Tubal ligation reversal may be done as an inpatient or outpatient procedure and is performed under general anesthesia. The most common surgical technique is to use a laparoscope inside the abdomen to repair and reconnect the tubes. This requires a couple of small incisions to insert the scope and instruments. Another method called mini-laparotomy involves making a larger incision in your abdomen, pulling the ends of the tubes out of your body through the incision and repairing and reattaching the tubes while they are outside your body.

Once the fallopian tubes have been unblocked or reconnected, eggs can once again travel through the tube to the uterus. The success rate for tubal ligation reversal tends to be highest in women under 35.
